Euromed Feminist Initiative IFE-EFI gathered 40 Syrian human rights and women rights activists and lawyers for the Follow up networking meeting “Toward a gender-sensitive Constitution: strategies for broader national and international support” held in Paris, the 15th of September 2017.
This meeting aimed to strengthen the network of Syrian women’s rights and human rights lawyers and legal experts to advocate for a democratic gender sensitive constitution and inclusive constitution building process, within Syria but also outside its borders.
During the first part of the day, the group had the opportunity to discuss the gender sensitive principles developed in 2016 by the CSWD in collaboration with legal experts, and exchanged views on strategies toward broader support for a gender sensitive constitutional-making process in Syria. Thereafter, they discussed the latest updates from the UN-conducted processes as well as strategies to evolve support for the demands of the Syrian women’s rights activists, organisations and coalitions at the UN level.
The Follow up networking meeting ended with the reflection of three working groups on the elaboration and implementation of concrete strategies for broadening social and political support for the Syrian gender sensitive principles and supporting gender equality within a conservative social and political environment. They highlighted the importance of taking advantage of the transition to prepare legislation proposals on women’s rights and stressed the emphasis of the advocacy work that the Syrian human rights and women rights activists’ and lawyers should do.
