Unsurprisingly, and after pulling out of UNESCO, Washington has decided to withdraw of the UN Human Rights Council. This latest announcement made on Tuesday the 19th of June by Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, resonated as another destructive American move led by the Trump administration. Haley said the move "is not a retreat from human rights commitments" and accused the council of being "a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias".
The Euromed Feminist Initiative condemns such a decision. Withdrawing from a Council that has enabled an independent, authoritative voice to speak out for human rights worldwide, to respond to crises, to support human rights defenders and to bring human rights closer to people shows the United States’ complete disregard for the fundamental rights and freedoms that define them.
