INTERNATIONAL LAW AND HUMAN VALUES BURRIED IN THE RUINS OF GAZA: THIS SHOWS THE DEEP GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN CRISES

2024-12-23T21:00:00Z

“Acquiescence in the devastation of Gaza and the massacre of its population, as well as in the persecution of the inhabitants of the West Bank, will leave an indelible mark in the memory of the societies which will be accountable for it.”

(Didier Fassin. French professor and writer)

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been killing without restraint women, children, old people, sick people, entire families, UNRWA personnel, journalists and humanitarian personnel. The massacre of the Palestinian people continues inexorably despite the decisions of the International Court of Justice and renewed and insistent calls of the United Nations (UN) for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.

At the beginning of 2024, on 19th of January, EuroMed Feminist Initiative issued its first statement for the year, asking the international powers: “The question will come once: where were you during the destruction of Gaza to the extent it is not fit for human living? Dropping internationally banned bombs to burn the populations and wipe out houses, hospitals, schools, to starve people and deprive them from water, electricity, life-saving medications. Mass killing of tens of thousands of people, 98% among whom civilians, majority of whom women and children. “

During the summer of 2024 the medical observatory Lancet noted that “Applying a conservative estimate.., it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza.”  Since then, the bombing has never stopped, even the bombing of hospitals, schools and tents that accommodating displaced families, and the population has now been subjected to famine; all this justified by the Israeli leaders on behalf of the fight against Hamas terrorism but defined by the International Court of Justice as “attempted genocide”.

According to the terms of the Israeli leaders, “There are no innocent civilians in Gaza and the bombing will last one year if needed”. And so, the bombing did continue throughout the 2024, unhindered by “International Community” and World Powers. Those who express their political opinion or their outrage at what is happening in Gaza, those who defend the universal values and international law are being accused by Israel of “justifying terrorism”!

Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem have been illegally occupied since 1967.  Gaza has been under blockade by land, air and sea since 2006. It is now erased and its population starved and massacred, deprived of water and health care. UNRWA is now banned from entering Israel.

§ EuroMed Feminist Initiative demands from the European Governments and the US administrations to stop looking the other way at a time when no one can any longer deny that there is an on-going genocide, and that, at a time when Israeli leaders claim to establish” the great Isreal from the river to the sea”.

§ EuroMed Feminist Initiative continues to urge international authorities to force the Israeli regime to stop the ongoing massacre and emphasizes that demands for the respect of international law and UN resolutions, including on Women, Peace and Security Agenda, cannot be labelled as “justification of terrorism”. Such assimilation has for consequence, among others, shrinking of the space of the civil society.

§ It is in the name of the universal values which guide all our actions that EuroMed Feminist Initiative condemns the bloody repression in the West Bank and the ongoing genocide in Gaza and rejoin our voices to those who call for this massacre to immediately stop!
