H.E. Mr. Miguel de Lucas González
Ambassador of Spain to Jordan
Monday, April 7th, 2025 – Amman
We extend our gratitude to H.E. Dr. Barq Al Dmoor – Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Development, representing H.E. the Minister of Social Development; Mrs. Mary Horvers – Representative of the EU Delegation to Jordan; Dr. Himyar Abdulmoghni – UNFPA Representative; representatives from ministries and public institutions; fellow ambassadors; representatives from other UN agencies; partner organizations of the project; as well as experts, activists, academics, and policymakers.
Acknowledge the trust of the European Union to the Spanish Cooperation in general and specifically in the context of this project to support the access to the Gender-based violence services.
Spain is very proud to have a feminist cooperation; that means to include, not only all actions against VAWG, but the active promotion of gender equality as a cross-cutting principle in all our actions, recognizing that democracy, peace, prosperity, and social progress require the full participation of women.
Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. It affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime and have an impact in mental, physical, sexual and reproductive health.
As this campaign also reminds us, violence against women and girls hinders women’s economic and political participation and has an impact on families and communities. In Jordan, more than a quarter of women have experienced violence by someone close to them.
Change is possible, and the effort of this campaign, along with the two previous campaigns, is key to raise awareness and information on the access to comprehensive services in order to prevent and protect Women and Girls victims of Gender-based violence.
The previous efforts reached more than 3 MILL people, together with almost 10.000 people reached by in-person awareness sessions and 700 people trained in GVB issues and ToT, participating in experience-sharing workshops as well.
Until now, this project has provided services for more than 5,000 people, mostly women and girls, including the access to case management, psychosocial support, legal services, and access to shelters for them and their children.
This project finishes next June 13th, but there is still a lot we must do to increase even more the positive impact that this initiative is bringing to Jordan.
I invite everyone to join and share this third and last national awareness campaign and to be an ally in preventing VAWG, supporting women’s rights organizations, and advocating to government agencies as well as international actors, private and public sector, for greater investment in the provision of services for victims and survivors of Gender-based Violence.
Thanks to the European Union, to the partners involved in this project, to the authorities, to UNFPA for its support, to the special guests and panelists, and a special thanks to EuroMed Feminist Initiative who have been working very hard to bring this campaign forward.
